ROCKSCAPES

This gallery contains some images that also appear in the Extracts gallery. In an effort to epitomise the significance of rocks in the Greek landscape, Yannis Tsarouchis (one of the most celebrated Greek painters of the 20th century) once famously wrote that “The Greek woods are the Greek rocks”. In Tsarouchis’ mind, rocks could better epitomise the true sense of Greek Nature, than forests, which he likened to some sort of Western European cultural onslaught at the end of the 20th century. Whether one agrees or not with Tsarouchis’ assertion, it is true that Rock formations, especially ones in the coastline, form an important part of the Greek landscape.
